Biking around Prague in the heart of Bohemia

Meet Prague, her surrounding old cities and her inspiring countryside

This bicycle tour starts and ends in the cultural capital of Bohemia: Prague. From Prague you follow the Elbe upstream through the Bohemian basin, in this region the Elbe still flows unhindered through the landscape. Characteristic to this tour are the important cities along the Elbe river such as Hradec Kralove, with remnants of the city walls and an impressive market square and Kutna Hora which was a silver mining town and now is a unesco world heritage. On your way you will pass through an ever changing landscape consisting of forests, old river branches, crop fields, and marshland. Cultural highlights are the mineral springs in Podebrady, the horse breeding grounds of Kladruby, the bone chapel of Kutna Hora the Nymburk monastery and of course the golden city: Prague.

This route runs along the Elbe river most of the time. This part of the route is fairly flat, and later on when you cycle via the hinterland the landscape becomes more hilly.

Day-by-day schedule

Day 1: Arrival Prague

Individual arrival in Prague, where your cycling tour through the Elbe river valley landscapes begins. In the hotel you will receive your travel documents and - if booked - the rental bikes.

Prague has many nicknames, this Golden City is heavily visited by tourists from all over the world. There are many highlights: The Charles Bridge with its many artists and musicians who try to earn a little pocket money, the Mala Strana (Prague Lesser Town) is the district where many artists have acquired a small spot. Hradcany, the big castle where the president resides, the Jewish cemetery, with the untouched, centuries old graves, where many leave a wish.

Writer Franz Grillparzer had an explanation: "It is here something that reminds of Venice: the surviving, namely, the ancient between and beside the new". And indeed, there are very few places where history made of stone presents itself in such a diversity in such a small space.

Day 2: Prag – Kourim (56 km / 37 miles)

The route takes you east of Prague along tranquil paths to Kostelec nad Cernymi Lesy (meaning church in the black woods). Here you can visit a beer museum and a beautiful gothic castle. Then it is only a few kilometres to Kourim, a small town in central Bohemia.

Day 3: Kourim – Kutna Hora (43 km / 29 miles)

Today's bike tour takes you through typical Bohemian landscapes to Kutna Hora, the former rival of Prague. The town became rich already at the beginning of the 12th century because of the silver mines. This wealth can still be found in the city back in the impressive buildings and churches.

Day 4: Kutna Hora – Pardubice (53 km / 35 miles)

Through the extensive forests east of Hradec Kralove and Pardubice, your cycle path leads in an arc past the castle Raby to the famous university town Hradec Kralove (Old German: Königgrätz), with a beautiful historical centre, with several beautiful squares. The centre has been completely preserved.

Day 6: Hradec Kralove – Jicin (58 km / 39 miles)

You will reach golden Prague along the banks of the Elbe and mostly over bicycle routes.
