Explore the Giant Mountains in huts - low budget!
The Krkonose (Giant Mountains) lie in North-East Bohemia and border Germany and Poland. The route takes you to the highest mountain, the Snezka (Snow head) which lies 1602 m above sea level. In 1963 the whole area was declared to be a nature reserve. This together with the infertile soil is the cause for the area to be sparsely populated. There is a myth about a giant, Kraknos, living in these mountains and protecting them from humans trying to harm or pollute the environment.
This trip is for participants who are willing to carry their backpacks all week, there is no luggage transport. We have chosen the distances of the day a little longer because of the smaller differences in altitude in the mountains (e.g. for ridge walks). The maps give you an idea of how you could handle the daily walks. Depending on how fit you are, you can extend or shorten the routes. The differences in altitude that are bridged every day cannot be compared to travelling to the Alps or the Pyrenees.
The huts (bouda's) are more comfortable than the high huts in the Alps, this is because almost all huts in the mountains can be reached and supplied by car in one way or another. There are hardly any communal sleeping quarters. We choose double rooms or if you wish family rooms. Lunch and dinner are exclusive because you will always come across an opportunity to have a bite to eat and a drink along the way, whether it be mineral water or beer.
YOU SPEND THE NIGHT IN BASIC HUTS / NO LUGGAGE TRANSFERS
Day-by-day scheduleDuring the day you will be expected at the hut (´bouda´ in Czech). Here you will get the final documents for your trip.
You make your own route to the next bouda. Here is but one proposal: A long hike up a narrow valley to the source of the Elbe. Then along the north side of the village of Harrachov to the Vosecka bouda.
You make your own route to the next bouda. Here is but one proposal: You will walk over the highest ridge of the mountains, with famous peaks such as the Violik, to one of the most famous huts of the Krkonose, the Moravska bouda. If you have forgotten something, you can take a bus to the village of Spindleruv Mlyn from here.
You make your own route to the next bouda. Here is but one proposal: You hike via two Polish mountain lakes and the plateau near the Lucni Hora to the Rozcesti bouda, which is also located on the wild plateau. You will pass by the memorial for the mountain victims.
You make your own route to the next bouda. Here is but one proposal: Via the Czech Republic's highest mountain, the Snezka, 1602 m., you walk along the ridge (the route is called Polish-Czech Friendship Road) to Horni Mala Upa. Overnight stay is at the border hamlet of Horni Mala Upa, probably in the hut Chalupa na proti snezce.
You make your own route to the next bouda. Here is but one proposal: Through the woods at the edge of the mountains you walk through the hamlet Velka Upa to the valley of the Javori stream, the night will probably be the Cervenokostolecka bouda.
You make your own route to the next bouda. Here is but one proposal: Via the high Lisci hora and other plateaus you hike back into the valley to Spindleruv Mlyn, most likely to your first accommodation.
