Around the carp lakes and old cities in south Bohemia
This is a cycle tour through one of the most beautiful area’s in the Czech Republic. It is a historically rich area, even in the small villages there are large farms whose buildings are a couple of hundred of years old such as in the Unesco protected farmers village of Holasovice. The tour starts in Budweis, known for its beautiful large market square and for the locally brewed Budweiser beer. You have the opportunity to cycle through the lush Bohemian forests towards the Unesco world heritage city of Cesky Krumlov with the second large castle of the Czech Republic and spend the whole afternoon sightseeing there. Furthermore you will visit historic sites such as the 16th century artificial lake of Rozmberk, the largest lake in the whole area that is used today to store excess water, such as during the 2002 and 2013 floodings.
On your route you will cycle most of the time on small rural roads, on which the occasional car or tractors drives. Or you will cycle on designated bicycle paths on which you can find only other cyclists.Day-by-day schedule
Ceske Budejovice (internationally also known as Budweis) is the most important and biggest city of South Bohemia, in which the world famous Budvar beer is brewed. A colleague of us will visit you early in the evening to have a chat and hand you over information and maps. Visit the Black Tower or see the Samson Fountain on the old square.
You will reach Hluboka by cycling over a bicyce path along the Moldau. Hluboka is a small village with a famous Castle, this castle is one of the biggest attractions in Bohemia, it has been built in a Tudor style, very impressive. After visiting the castle you will cycle through a lake area with little villages to the final destination of today, Trebon.
Resting day in Trebon, with its historical center and the big Svet lake on the edge of the city (perfect for swimming). You could also choose to cycle a route through the nature reserve Golden Stream, a system of 17th century carp lakes (part of the UNESCO-program).
You will cycle through forests, swamps, fields and little villages to Kaplice, a beautiful, partly hilly, route to a nice town on the edge of the Bohemian Forest.
Through a diverse landscape, on a road high above the Moldau, you will reach Rozmberk with it´s two castles on the hilltop. After cycling over old forgotten roads, you will reach one of the pearls of south Bohemia, the incredible UNESCO-town which has been there since the middle ages, Cesky Krumlov.
Day off in Cesky Krumlov. You could visit the second largest castle of Bohemia, high above the Moldau: the Schwarzenberg castle. This aristocratic family ruled this area for centuries. Or visit the museum of Egon Schiele, a major figurative expressionist artist from Austria (1890-1918), with extraordinary paintings and drawings.
Through some dense forests you will arrive in the village of Holasovice, where all the farms are built in the similair Barock-style. Carp-ponds will lead you back to Ceske Budejovice, but not before leading you to the monastry of Zlata Koruna (Golden Crown) with it´s well known library with very old books on the shelves.
Your cycle-trip ends after breakfast. You can choose to take the car/train/plane back home, or choose to stay some couple of nights in Prague.
